Fertilizer factory shuts down amid ammonia shortage in Ctg

The two major fertilizer plants in Anwara--CUFL and KAFCO--have remained shut since March 4 due to a gas shortage

Update : 19 Apr 2026, 10:15 PM

Production at DAP Fertilizer Company Limited (DAPFCL), a key urea fertilizer producer, has been halted due to a shortage of ammonia, a primary raw material. According to officials, operation was suspended around 8:00 pm on Saturday.

Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Alamgir Jalil, Manager (Administration) and Head of the Administration Division at DAPFCL, said, “Production has been stopped since 8 pm on Saturday due to a shortage of ammonia, one of the plant’s main raw materials. We usually receive ammonia from Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) and Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO). Both factories are currently shut down. Until they resume operation and supply ammonia, we have no option but to keep DAPFCL closed.”

The two major fertilizer plants in Anwara--CUFL and KAFCO--have remained shut since March 4 due to a gas shortage.

Sources said that DAPFCL was established under the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) to ensure balanced fertilizer use in the agricultural sector and to meet the growing demand for compound fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus.

Located in Rangadia of Anwara upazila, the factory has two separate units (DAP-1 and DAP-2), each with a daily production capacity of 800 tons of DAP fertilizer. After completion of the construction work, the plant started commercial production in 2006. The facility now produces around 600 to 700 tons of urea per day.
