Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has said that diplomatic efforts are ongoing over the Bangladeshi vessel Banglar Joyjatra, which has been unable to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

He made the remarks on Saturday morning while talking to journalists after attending the graduation parade of the 28th batch of trainee ratings at the National Maritime Institute in Chittagong.

The minister noted that an artificial demand and crisis in fuel are being created in the country. As evidence, he said, thousands of liters of stockpiled diesel have been seized. “We have challenges, but there is no crisis. The government is working to ensure a stable fuel supply. National interest will be given top priority before making any decisions,” he added.

Regarding the possibility of handing over the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chittagong Port to a foreign operator, the minister said the government would carefully consider all aspects, including national interest, port profitability, and prospects for technological advancement. “Above all, the country’s interests will be protected,” he emphasized.

He further stated that trained young professionals in the maritime sector will represent Bangladesh on the global stage and showcase the country’s capabilities. “They are ready to take Bangladesh forward through maritime routes. With skilled manpower, the country aims to advance further in the maritime sector,” he said.

Highlighting the broader purpose of education, the minister said it is not limited to acquiring knowledge but also aims at the full physical and mental development of individuals.

Addressing the cadets, he urged them to establish themselves through determination and professionalism in whatever roles they undertake, whether in ship management or navigation. “Nearly 70% of the world is covered by water, which was once considered inaccessible. However, the modern world has overcome those limitations,” he added.
