The death toll from flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in Chittagong Division has risen to 55, with more than 44,000 houses damaged across five districts, according to the Divisional Commissioner’s Office.
At least 39 people were injured in the disaster as of Tuesday, the office said.
Cox’s Bazar recorded the highest number of deaths, with 31 people killed, 24 injured and one person reported missing. In Chittagong district, 15 people died and 12 others were injured. Bandarban reported six deaths and two injuries, while Rangamati recorded three deaths and Khagrachhari reported one death and one injury.
The floods damaged a total of 44,400 houses in the five districts. Bandarban suffered the highest number of damaged homes at 16,376, followed by Chittagong with 15,223, Cox’s Bazar with 11,278, Khagrachhari with 1,040 and Rangamati with 483.
The government has distributed relief materials and cash assistance to affected communities in the flood-hit areas. In Chittagong, 795 tonnes of rice and Tk 67.5 lakh in cash have been allocated. Cox’s Bazar received 256 tonnes of rice, Tk 20.85 lakh, 7,830 packets of dry food and cooked meals worth Tk 5 lakh.
Rangamati has received 295 tonnes of rice and Tk 35 lakh in cash assistance, while Khagrachhari received 300 tonnes of rice and Tk 30.5 lakh. In Bandarban, authorities distributed 55 tonnes of rice, Tk 4 lakh and 2,850 packets of dry food.
Relief supplies remain in reserve in the affected districts. Chittagong has 405 tonnes of rice and Tk 17.25 lakh in stock. Cox’s Bazar has 58 tonnes of rice, Tk 2.75 lakh, 1,678 packets of dry food and seven bundles of corrugated iron sheets. Rangamati has 205 tonnes of rice and Tk 10 lakh, Khagrachhari has 100 tonnes of rice and Tk 9.5 lakh, while Bandarban has 176 tonnes of rice, Tk 2 lakh and 620 packets of dry food in reserve.
Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Dr Md Ziauddin said floodwaters have receded significantly in the affected districts as rainfall stopped over the past two days. If the weather remains favourable, the flood situation is expected to return to normal within the next two to three days.
He said most residents have already returned to their homes, while authorities are preparing a detailed list of damaged houses and continuing relief assistance for flood victims.
