Khulna is set to celebrate Pohela Boishakh, welcoming the Bangla New Year 1433 with vibrant festivities and traditional enthusiasm.
The district administration, along with socio-cultural organisations, political parties and educational institutions, has taken elaborate programmes to mark the occasion.
Celebrations will begin at 8 am on Tuesday with a colourful Anondo Shobhajatra, starting from Khulna Railway Station and ending at Shaheed Hadis Park. The procession will be followed by a discussion, cultural programme, prize distribution and a daylong traditional Lokoj Mela.
Bangladesh Shishu Academy, the district Shilpakala Academy and the Department of Archaeology will organize drawing and essay competitions for children. The Khulna Divisional Museum will remain open, while traditional food will be served in jails and government-run orphanages. Children from orphanages and inmates will also take part in cultural programmes.
At Khulna University, celebrations will begin with Borsho Abahon at 7:15am, followed by a fair and Anondo Shobhajatra. Traditional performances such as lathikhela, magic shows and monkey shows will continue throughout the day, ending with a cultural programme in the evening.
On the eve of the New Year, Chaitra Sankranti will be observed with a kite festival, traditional games, Alpana Utsab and cultural events.
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) has planned a three-day programme featuring Alpana Utsab, traditional games, kite festival, fairs, processions and cultural activities. A Boishakhi Mela and Borsoboron musical programme will also be held on campus.
Cultural organizations, including Udichi Shilpigoshthi, will arrange Bangla Borsoboron programmes on Lower Jessore Road, while political parties will also celebrate the day with various events.
