Workers and employees of Thakurgaon Sugar Mill held a gate meeting and protest march on Sunday, pressing three main demands: the regularization of seasonal staff based on merit, promotions to strengthen a skilled workforce, and an immediate 15% special allowance under the Wage Commission.
The event, organized by the Thakurgaon Sugar Mill Union, began at the mill gate and was followed by a protest march to the mill management, where a memorandum of demands was submitted.
The hour-long meeting was chaired by Abdul Kuddus, President of the Thakurgaon Sugar Mill Workers Union and Bangladesh Sugar Industry Corporation Workers Federation. Key speakers included Abdullah Al Mahmud Khan Ratan, General Secretary of the union, and Ruhul Amin, Deputy General Secretary.
Speakers stressed that protecting workers is vital to sustaining the sugar industry and warned that failure to meet the demands within 10 days could trigger a larger movement.
