The Election Commission has announced October 29 for the by-election to the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, three weeks after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected president.
Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the schedule on Thursday after the commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, finalised it.
According to the schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers is September 27, with scrutiny set for September 29. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until October 7, while electoral symbols will be allocated on October 8.
Voting will be held from 8am to 4pm without a break, Akhtar said at a briefing at the Election Commission headquarters.
The Thakurgaon district election officer has been appointed returning officer, with three assistant returning officers.
Mirza Fakhrul was elected president through a parliamentary vote on August 20 and took the oath the following day. The Parliament Secretariat subsequently declared his Thakurgaon-1 seat vacant.
