Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) formed a human chain and held a protest procession on Wednesday, demanding a fair investigation and the maximum punishment for those responsible for the murder of Sharmin Zahan Khadiza, a student of the university’s 51st batch.

The protest began in the afternoon at the Amar Ekushey Sculpture on campus. The procession later moved through various campus roads and concluded in front of the Central Shaheed Minar.

Alongside students, the event was attended by Sharmin’s mother, Farida Yasmin, teachers from several departments including Public Administration, leaders of the JUCSU, and activists from different political organizations.

Addressing the human chain, Farida Yasmin expressed her grief, saying, ‘’Although I had married off my daughter, I still don’t know how this incident happened. My only demand is proper justice for my daughter’s killers.”

Professor Hore Krishna Kundu, chairman of the Public Administration Department, said, “We never wanted to take to the streets to demand justice, but the situation left us no choice. Even after several days since the killing on March 15, there has been no clear explanation or visible progress in the investigation. Impunity only encourages criminals.”

The protesters demanded a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation and urged authorities to ensure the highest punishment for those found guilty. They emphasized that justice in this case is crucial not only for Sharmin but also for the safety and security of all citizens, calling on the university administration, police, and state authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable and break the culture of impunity.
