A husband and wife were seriously burned in a gas explosion at their home in the Kishannagar area of Dhamrai Municipality on Tuesday night.
The victims, Sumona ,45, and her husband Badsha Mia ,55, residents of Bijoynagar, are currently receiving treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
The explosion occurred around 10:30 pm in the kitchen of their two-storey house, damaging windows and parts of two rooms. Neighbours reported hearing a loud blast and immediately rushed to the scene, finding the couple lying on the floor with severe burns. They were first taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar before being referred to Dhaka for specialised care.
Doctors confirmed that Sumona suffered burns on approximately 85 per cent of her body, while Badsha Mia sustained burns on about 20 percent, including both hands.
Al Amin, a Dhamrai Fire Service and Civil Defence official, said the explosion may have been caused by a leak in the Titas gas line, which allowed gas to accumulate in the kitchen. “The exact cause is under investigation,” he added.
The fire service has controlled the situation, and authorities are reviewing safety measures in the area.
