A Bangladeshi child is in critical condition after being injured by a stray bullet during heavy fighting between the Arakan Army and Rohingya armed groups across the Myanmar border.

Huzaifa Afnan, 9, has been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head.

Hospital sources said Huzaifa was brought to CMCH by ambulance at around 4:30pm on Sunday.

After examination, the on-duty doctors admitted her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She is currently undergoing treatment there, confirmed SI Alauddin Talukdar of the CMCH police outpost.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning in the Techcha Bridge area of Teknaf's Whykong union, where Huzaifa was hit by a bullet fired from across the Myanmar border.

Huzaifa Afnan is the daughter of Jasim Uddin of Lambabil village and a third-grade student of Lambabil Haji Mohammad Hossain Government Primary School.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Huzaifa’s uncle Shawkat Ali said: “Her condition is extremely critical. She is receiving treatment in the ICU.”
