The Jahangirnagar University (JU) branch of Bangladesh Democratic Student Council (BDSC) has expressed deep concern and condemnation on the announcement of Chhatra Dal’s new residential hall committees.

The remarks came during a press conference held by BDSC leaders and activists at the university’s Bottola area at 9:30pm on Friday.

JU unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal has announced committees for 17 residential halls of the university.

The written statement was read out by Arifuzzaman Ujjal, convener of the BDSC JU branch.

In the press conference, Arifuzzaman said: “Through the July mass uprising, we have achieved a new Bangladesh, where every student’s heartfelt demand is the total eradication of gonroom, guestroom, and ragging culture from every hall of the universities.”

“By forming political committees in the halls, the nationalist Chhatra Dal has ignored this core demand of students.”

“We believe this will bring back gonroom, guestroom, and ragging culture in the halls, which would be a total betrayal of the spirit of the July uprising,” he added.

The convener further said: “At a time when every student in Bangladesh wants the abolition of the fascist political structure, the Chhatra Dal’s move to form hall committees seems like an attempt to give the fascist structure a new form.”
