Jamaat leader removed just hours after being nominated as MP candidate

The matter had sparked internal discussions and debates within the party

Update : 14 Jun 2025, 02:56 PM

Following the announcement of Jamaat-e-Islami’s candidate for the Chittagong-15 (Satkania-Lohagara) constituency, Shahjahan Chowdhury was removed from his position as the ameer of the party’s Chittagong city unit.

Md Nazrul Islam has been appointed as the acting ameer of Chittagong city Jamaat, replacing Shahjahan Chowdhury.

During a leadership assembly held at a restaurant in Keranihat, Satkania, on Friday morning, the party’s central secretary general, Professor Mia Golam Parwar, formally announced Shahjahan as the candidate.

Later that day, during another leadership assembly at the party's city office in Dewanbazar, Chittagong, Shahjahan was relieved of his position, and Nazrul, who had been serving as the naib-e-ameer, was appointed as the acting ameer.

The announcement was officially made by Golam.

However, party leaders and activists are viewing this reshuffle as a strategic compromise.

Chittagong city Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary Mohammad Ullah told reporters: “Shahjahan has been nominated as the party’s candidate from Satkania. Therefore, he will need to spend more time there. As a result, Naib-e-Ameer Nazrul Islam has been made the acting ameer.”

Notably, on February 3 of this year, ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, Jamaat-e-Islami announced candidates for 23 constituencies, leaving the Chittagong-15 seat vacant at the time.

However, Shahjahan had consistently claimed that he was the final candidate for that constituency.

The matter had sparked internal discussions and debates within the party.

Amid this, he was officially declared the party’s candidate from the constituency on Friday.
