Three people were killed in a head-on collision between a Mahindra vehicle and an oil tanker in Dumuria upazila of Khulna.
The deceased include the driver of the Mahindra and two teachers.
Among the victims were Hafez Moinul Islam, a teacher and the imam of Masjid Abu Bakar (RA) in Koyra Sadar, his companion teacher Abdul Rashid, and the Mahindra driver Rafiqul Islam.
The two teachers were on their way to participate in a human chain and memorandum submission program demanding unpaid salaries. The event was scheduled to take place in front of the Khulna deputy commissioner’s office.
Several others were also injured in the incident. The injured have been admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
The accident occurred around 10:30am on Saturday in front of the Dumuria Fire Service station.
Dumuria police station Officer-in-Charge Masud Rana confirmed the matter. He said the Mahindra was travelling towards Khulna from Chuknagar with passengers when it collided with an oncoming oil tanker at the Golna area. Three people died on the spot. The injured were rescued and sent to the hospital.
Khornia Highway police station Sub-Inspector Shimul Ahmed said reckless driving and the poor condition of the road led to the crash. The Mahindra, carrying passengers from Chuknagar to Khulna, collided head-on with the tanker at a spot called Golna. The driver and two others died on the spot.
