A Chhatra League leader allegedly killed a BNP activist in Moheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, on Monday following a political dispute that escalated into deadly violence.

Rashid Ahmed, 57, was beaten to death, reportedly by Amit Iqbal, a leader of the local Chhatra League.

Amit is the senior joint convener of the Kalarmarchhara union Chhatra League.

The deceased, Rashid, was the son of the late Lal Mia from Uttar Nolbila and a member of the local Kalarmarchhara union BNP, serving as vice president of Ward No 1 BNP.

The incident occurred around noon in the Uttar Nolbila area of Kalarmarchhara union in the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshkhali police station Khaisar Hamid said Rashid was beaten to death in Kalarmarchhara. "Police have arrested one suspect, and operations are ongoing to apprehend the others involved."

According to eyewitnesses and the police, Amit and his friends were playing cards by the roadside in Uttar Nolbila village. When Rashid passed by, Amit reportedly made provocative remarks about BNP politics.

An argument broke out, during which Amit became enraged and struck Rashid with a stick. Later, Amit and his brother Kamrul assaulted Rashid again using a sharp iron rod.

Locals rescued the injured Rashid and first took him to Badarkhali General Hospital. He was then transferred to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the news of Rashid’s death, enraged locals surrounded Amit’s house and captured his brother Kamrul, turning him over to Moheshkhali police.

Amit was still on the run at the time of writing.
