Two people, including an SSC examinee, were killed in separate road accidents in Mirsharai, Chittagong.
One of the victims, Shimanto Deb Nath, 26, a refrigerator mechanic, died after losing control of his motorcycle around 5:30pm on Friday in the Muchipool area on the north side of Mithachhara Bazar along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
On the same day around 8pm, another accident took place at the Baratakia U-turn area on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Sadia Yasmin Juthi,19, an SSC candidate, was killed after the auto-rickshaw she was riding in was hit by a bus. She was scheduled to take part in this year’s SSC exam from Abul Kashem Girls’ High School in the upazila. Locals rescued her and took her to a private hospital’s emergency department, where doctors declared her dead.
Shimanto was the son of Shibu Chandra Nath from Shyam Sundar Mahajan Bari in Teteya area, Ward 2 of the Katasora Union in the upazila.
Shimanto’s relative, Rupan Chandra Nath, said that he was on his way to visit a family member in Sitakunda when he lost control of his motorcycle in the Muchipool area. He fell off the vehicle and was taken by locals to the Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead.
Rupan also said that Shimanto ran a refrigerator repair shop on the Jorarganj-Aburhat road. “We never imagined we’d lose him so soon,” he added.
Dr. Fahim Ferdous, the on-duty doctor at Mirsharai Upazila Health Complex, said: “Shimanto Deb Nath was brought in around 6 PM on Friday, but he had already died before reaching the hospital.”
Sub-inspector Borhan Uddin of Jorarganj Highway Police Station said that Shimanto died after losing control of his motorcycle (Chittagong Metro-H 18-7238) in the afternoon. The body was handed over to the family, and the damaged motorcycle is now in police custody.
Regarding Sadia Yasmin Juthi’s death, eyewitness Nazrul Islam said that a battery-run auto-rickshaw carrying Juthi tried to cross the highway near the Baratakia U-turn when a Shahin Paribahan bus, coming from Chittagong, lost control and ran over her. She died on the spot.
Her husband Yasin said that Juthi had left home to visit her grandmother in Duaru area of Baratakia. After getting off a bus, she was traveling in a battery-run rickshaw when another bus struck and killed her. She was preparing to sit for the SSC exam from Abul Kashem Girls’ High School.
Jahangir Alam, in-charge of the Faujdarhat Highway Police, confirmed that they had received reports of a fatal accident in the Baratakia Bypass area and dispatched a team to the scene.
