Tragedy struck a family early on Sunday as four of its members were killed when a bus ran over a battery-powered autorickshaw in Gouripur, Mymensingh, while they were on their way home to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their loved ones.
Two others were injured in the incident, which took place at the Baishakhi Mor area on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj road in Gouripur, confirmed Police Superintendent Kazi Akhtar Ul Alam.
According to the family members, they were on their way to their village home from Mymensingh city to celebrate Eid when the accident occurred.
The deceased were Kulsum Begum, 85, from the Bhangnamari area of Gouripur, her daughter Dilruba, 39, Dilruba’s two daughters Riti, 14, and Priti, 6, family members confirmed.
Dilruba’s daughter Mahi, 16, and relative Shyamoli, 18, were injured and are being treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, they said.
SP Kazi Akhtar said that a passenger bus coming from Kishoreganj to Mymensingh ran over the battery-powered auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
"Three people died on the spot. After three others were brought to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in an injured state, one more person died. The bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue," he added.
Dilruba’s brother Saiful Islam said: “My sister lived in Mymensingh city with her husband Manik Mia and their children. My sister had three daughters. She was accompanied by my mother. They left for their village home this morning to celebrate Eid and were hit by a bus at the Baishakhi Mor area in Gouripur. The auto-rickshaw was crushed.
"In the collision, my mother, younger sister, and two nieces died. My elder niece Mahi, an SSC candidate, was injured and admitted to the hospital.”
He continued: “We cannot accept that such a tragic incident has happened to our family. My brother-in-law Manik has gone mad after losing four members of the same family.”
