Assailants on motorcycles opened fire on a private car in Chittagong early on Sunday, killing two people and injuring two others before fleeing the scene.
The deputy commissioner of the North Zone of the city police, Amirul Islam, reported that the incident occurred around 2:45am in the Access Road area under Bakalia police station.
The deceased were Abdullah and Manik, confirmed Amirul.
Two others, Hridoy and Robin, are being treated at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), he added.
Upon hearing the news, the relatives of the deceased Manik rushed to CMCH and were devastated.
Manik's relatives said that he was a car driver and worked for an individual named Sarwar.
No detailed information is available about the deceased Abdullah.
SI Nurul Alam of CMCH police outpost said: “Four individuals were brought to the hospital after being shot on Access Road. Two were declared dead after examination, while the remaining two are receiving treatment.”
According to eyewitnesses, at around 2:45am, loud gunfire was heard near the Gulzar Begum Intersection on Access Road.
Several youths armed with weapons chased a private car on motorcycles, they said.
They opened fire on the moving car, shooting all four individuals inside, before quickly fleeing the scene, as per eyewitnesses.
DC Amirul Islam said: "The bodies of the two deceased are at CMCH. The two injured are being treated. All the deceased and injured were in the private car. An investigation is underway."
