Dilip Kumar Agarwala, managing director of Diamond World Ltd, has been arrested in connection with a money laundering case filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested him in the capital’s Banani area around 6:00pm on Monday.
DMP Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest, saying Agarwala was detained at the CID’s request in connection with a case filed against him.
The process of handing him over to the CID is underway, he added.
The CID filed the case with Gulshan Police Station under the Money Laundering Prevention Act over allegations that Agarwala laundered Tk678.19 crore under the guise of gold and diamond purchases.
During its preliminary investigation, the agency raised questions about the sources of gold and diamonds procured by his company and the authenticity of documents provided by its suppliers.
