A constuction worker has been detained over allegations of raping a 16-year-old girl from the Khyang community with mental health condition in Rowangchhari upazila, Bandarban.
Locals held Md Jamal Hossain, 32, a day after the incident and turned him over to local police on Tuesday.
Jamal is the son of Md Nazrul Islam from Barisal and has been working as a construction worker on the Rowangchhari-Ruma road.
According to villagers, the girl used to wander around the neighbourhood. At one point on Monday evening, Jamal took her into a jungle from Khamtang Para and raped her.
Hearing her screams, the villagers rescued her, but Jamal fled.
The next morning, other workers engaged in road construction caught him and handed him over to the villagers.
The villagers kept him in a school and informed Rowangchhari police, after which the police took him into custody.
Bandarban Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Abdul Karim said legal action will be taken against him.
The police have spoken to the girl's family and advised them to file a case, he added.
