Update : 10 Mar 2025, 09:50 AM

A gold trader was robbed and hacked to death by robbers while returning home with his wife after closing his shop.

Police and military personnel visited the scene after receiving the news.

The incident took place around 8:30pm at Noyarhat market in Ashulia, Savar.

The gold trader, severely injured, was rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 10:45pm.

The deceased, Dilip Das, 47, was the owner of Dilip Swarnalay at Noyarhat market.

Khokon Sarker, the victim's cousin, said: "As usual, around 8:30pm, he (Dilip Das) was closing his shop and preparing to head home. His wife was with him. While he was closing the shutter, three robbers pulled on the gold bag hanging from his neck. When they couldn’t get the bag, they attacked Dilip with a machete and forcibly grabbed the bag before fleeing."

The victim's wife, Swarasti Das, said: "He was closing the shop to go home, and I was with him. Suddenly, one of the attackers grabbed his gold bag from behind. There were three of them, all young. When they failed to grab the bag, they brutally attacked Dilip with a machete and took the bag from him. When we screamed, the attackers detonated two cocktails and ran away."

She added: “The bag contained around 20 to 25 bhori of gold, along with cash. However, I could not immediately estimate the amount of cash in the bag.”

Merazur Rehan Pavel, emergency medical officer at Enam Medical College Hospital, said: "Dilip was brought to our hospital around 10:30pm. He had deep, sharp weapon wounds on his chest, face, and back. We began treatment, but he passed away while under care."

Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Kamal Hossain from Ashulia police station said: "CCTV footage showed the attackers striking Dilip from behind as he was locking his shop. When he turned around, they attacked him again. They then took the bag and fled the scene.

“The footage also shows smoke, suggesting they exploded cocktails while escaping. We, along with the DB and Dhaka District Police, are actively working on the case to apprehend the culprits."
