Clashes broke out between garment workers and police in Ashulia, Savar, on Monday, prompting police to fire several rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

No casualties were immediately reported. Following the clashes, workers and police remained in a standoff.

The incident occurred after 10am in the Narsinghapur and Nishchintapur areas along the Abdullahpur-Baipail road. Most factories along the road declared a general holiday amid the unrest.

According to witnesses, workers initially gathered in front of a factory owned by Ananta Group before moving to a Hamim Group factory, where they allegedly threw bricks.

Tensions escalated when the workers attempted to block the road to press home their demands, triggering a confrontation with law enforcement personnel and subsequent clashes.

Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells in an effort to disperse the workers and bring the situation under control.

Shoeb Ahmed, additional superintendent of police (operations and intelligence) at Industrial Police-1, said police were working to restore order.

A tense situation prevailed in the area at the time of filing this report, with additional police personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
