Ashulia’s industrial area remained tense on Tuesday as garment workers continued protesting for a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000, extending unrest that has persisted for several days.

Intermittent clashes between workers and police began around 9am at several points along the Baipail-Abdullahpur road and continued through the morning.

Workers had initially arrived at factories for their shifts. However, after 8:30am, several factories, including a Hamim Group facility in Narsinghapur, suspended operations, prompting workers to take to the streets.

As workers gathered outside factories and attempted to block roads, police fired tear gas shells to disperse them.

During the confrontations, protesters also set fires at several locations in an attempt to block the road.

As of 11:20am, the situation remained tense in Nishchintapur and the Unique area along the Baipail-Abdullahpur road.

Although police dispersed the protesters using tear gas and charges, workers later regrouped in nearby alleyways.

Sources said several factory authorities had been forced to suspend operations amid the unrest, but the exact number of affected factories was not immediately known.
