Police in Tangail claim to have unravelled the mystery behind the robbery on three buses carrying students on a school trip in Ghatail.
Two more suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
A looted mobile phone and a pickup truck used in the robbery were recovered from them.
This brings the total number of arrests in the case to six.
Tangail Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman shared these details during a press briefing at his office on Monday afternoon.
The arrested individuals are Shafiqul Islam Sharif, 19, and Rupan Chandra Bhat, 24, from Rangpur.
Superintendent Mizanur Rahman said: “The police initially arrested four suspects, who were known as local robbers, along with looted items. The victims identified the suspects as being involved in the robbery.”
Following information provided by those initially arrested, and through the use of technology, police apprehended Shafiqul Islam Sharif and Rupan Chandra Bhat on February 27 from the Gazipur Sadar and Bashan areas.
At the time of their arrest, a looted mobile phone and the pickup truck used in the robbery were recovered. The two are currently in police custody, while the other four remain in Tangail Jail.
The Superintendent added: “Five other individuals involved in the robbery were arrested last Saturday for a separate robbery at a house in Tetulia, Panchagarh. They will be brought to Tangail under a shown arrest procedure.”
On February 25, around 3:45am, teachers, students, and guardians from Soaitpur High School in Fulbaria Upazila, Mymensingh, set off in four buses for a school trip to Green Valley Park in Natore.
At approximately 4am, as they reached the Lakshmaner Badh area in Sagardighi Union of Ghatail Upazila, Tangail, a group of robbers blocked the road with logs, forcing the buses to stop.
Around 10-12 robbers, armed with local weapons, looted cash, mobile phones, and valuable items from the teachers, students, and guardians on three of the buses. Before the police could reach the scene, the robbers escaped.
The robbers took away around Tk1.5 lakh in cash, one bhori (approximately 11.66 grams) of gold, and 10 smartphones. Two individuals, Sakhawat Hossain Robin, a computer lab operator, and guardian Shahidullah Talukdar, were assaulted during the robbery.
Several students also fainted during the ordeal. Later, the school's headteacher filed a case with the police, naming 10 to 12 unidentified individuals as suspects.
