A one-month-old baby girl in Bhuapur, Tangail, was mistakenly administered a rabies vaccine instead of a routine measles dose at a government health facility, triggering allegations of negligence.
The incident took place on Wednesday at the Bhuapur Upazila Health Complex when the infant, Fatima, was brought by her mother for routine immunization.
According to the family, the designated vaccinator Nurul Islam Nuru was absent at the time. Health inspector Kayum, reportedly on leave preparation (PRL), was subsequently called in by Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Lutfur Rahman Azad to carry out the vaccination.
During the procedure, Kayum allegedly administered two doses of anti-rabies vaccine instead of the measles vaccine. The family protested after discovering the error and also claimed that they were later mistreated by the health worker.
The family further said the child has since become weak and lethargic, demanding accountability and strict action against those responsible.
Health inspector Kayyum admitted the mistake, calling it unintentional and expressing regret.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Lutfur Rahman Azad also acknowledged the error, terming it an “unfortunate lapse” and saying greater caution should have been taken. He added that the vaccine is not expected to cause serious complications, though the child will remain under observation.
