A sub-inspector (SI) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) was attacked while on duty at a checkpost on Friday night.
The incident took place on the Outer Ring Road under the jurisdiction of Patenga police station, confirmed by Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (PR & Media) Mahmuda Begum on Saturday.
The injured police officer has been identified as Yusuf Ali, who serves as an SI at Patenga Model police station.
According to the police, the attackers, Simon, 27, and Ali Imad alias Tafsir Imad, 22, physically assaulted SI Yusuf Ali and took away his mobile phone, wallet, and wireless device while he was on duty at the checkpost near Patenga Sea Beach on Friday night.
When SI Yusuf Ali identified himself and called for help, the attackers accused him of being a fake police officer and attempted to incite a mob against him.
Police further said that upon receiving information, a patrolling team from Patenga police station, along with local residents, rushed to the scene and rescued SI Yusuf Ali.
During the commotion, the two attackers were caught and beaten by an angry crowd before being handed over to the police.
The stolen items, including the mobile phone, wallet, and walkie-talkie, were recovered.
Additionally, a knife used in the crime and a motorcycle were seized from the suspects.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Mahmuda Begum said: "Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack on the police officer. A case has been filed under the Speedy Trial Act at Patenga Model police station, and efforts are ongoing to arrest other individuals involved in the incident."
