At least 12 shops were gutted in a fire at a local market in Matlab Dakshin Upazila of Chandpur on Friday, according to the Fire Service.

Victims said that 10 people were injured while trying to douse the flames, reported UNB.

Traders Ali Ahmmad, Anas, and others reported that the fire erupted from a tea stall owned by Abdul Baten at Munshirhat Bazar around 4am and quickly spread, engulfing other shops.

After being informed, two firefighting units from Matlab Dakshin fire station rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control within two hours, according to Fire Station Officer Mohammad Ali.

He suspected that the fire might have started due to an electric short-circuit.

He added that the full extent of the damages caused by the fire will be determined after an investigation.

However, the affected traders claimed that the damages could exceed Tk1 crore.

The gutted shops included grocery stores, mobile servicing outlets, fruit vendors, cosmetics shops, and sweetmeats outlets.
