A 50-year-old candidate, has taken part in the admission test for the "B" unit under the Faculty of Arts and Law at Jagannath University for the 2024-25 academic year.

On Saturday, Tawhidur Rahman Taku appeared for the first shift of the "B" unit admission test.

Taku hails from Naogaon Sadar upazila. His father, the late Bazlur Rashid, was a station master by profession.

During his teenage years, Taku was diagnosed with a complex brain disorder just before sitting for his lower secondary examination, leading to mental instability.

He battled the illness for about 26-27 years. During this period, he got married, but his wife later left him.

After his wife’s departure, his mother and elder sister took care of him.

Once he recovered, he enrolled at Naogaon KD Government High School. Later, he passed the JDC, Dakhil, and Alim examinations under the Madrasa Education Board.

This year, he is competing in university admission tests.

Reflecting on his journey, Taku said: "I fell ill with a severe brain condition while studying in the eighth grade. I was sick for a long time. In 2017-18, I regained my health and restarted my studies. I passed HSC last year, and today (Saturday), I am here at JnU for the exam. My English preparation is not very strong, but I will still try my best."

Regarding his future aspirations, he said: "If I do not get a chance at Jagannath this year, I will sit for the exam again next year if I am eligible. Besides, I am determined to secure admission to Rajshahi University or Jahangirnagar University, InshaAllah."

When asked about his career goals, he said: "If I get admitted, I want to study at the university and become a teacher. My aim is to teach underprivileged students at a low cost so they can receive a good education at minimal expense."

Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim, the vice-chancellor of Jagannath University, commented on the matter, saying: "There is no legal barrier to his participation, but we will investigate whether he has engaged in any irregularities."
