Seven workers were abducted from Lulaing Bazar in Sarai union of Lama upazila, Bandarban, Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 11:30pm, when an armed group of unidentified assailants allegedly abducted the workers at gunpoint.
Due to the area’s remote location and lack of mobile network connectivity, the identities of the abductees and the group responsible for the abduction remain unconfirmed.
Local sources said that the workers had travelled from Lohagara, Chakaria, Manikpur, and neighbouring districts to work in vegetable fields along the banks of the Luline canal.
Families of the abducted workers have reportedly received ransom demands of Tk1.9 lakh per person.
Sarai UP Chairman Idris Company said: “I have heard about workers being abducted from the area and ransom being demanded. However, I cannot provide specific details.”
Inspector Md Atiqur Rahman, in charge of the Lama Kayaju Para Police Outpost, said: “Joint forces have launched an operation to rescue the abductees. We are hopeful of recovering them soon.”
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and coordinate efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted workers.
