Moniruzzaman Khan Faruk, convener of Barisal metropolitan BNP, and Ziauddin Sikder, member secretary, have been issued show-cause notices for organizing a large motorcycle showdown in the city.
On Monday afternoon, the showcause notices, signed by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, senior joint secretary general of the BNP, were delivered to the two leaders.
They were instructed to respond within 24 hours of receiving the notices.
Speaking to the media, both Moniruzzaman Khan Faruk and Ziauddin Sikder confirmed receiving separate show-cause notices from the central BNP.
According to the notices, the incident occurred on Saturday, when they were escorted from Barisal airport to the party office in a motorcycle showdown.
Ziauddin Sikder, however, denied organizing any such showdown.
He said: "There was no showdown. After arriving at Nathullabad in the city on January 11 (Saturday), party members gathered on their own accord. Later, we held a brief meeting at the party office with the members who had gathered. The central BNP issued show-cause notices regarding this incident. We will submit our response tomorrow (Tuesday)."
On Saturday, Moniruzzaman Khan Faruk and Ziauddin Sikder arrived in Barisal from Dhaka via Shohagh Paribahan.
To welcome them, over 50 motorcycles were mobilized by ward BNP leaders and affiliated organizations in front of the passport office in Nathullabad.
At around noon, Moniruzzaman and Zia were escorted to the party office in a motorcycle convoy, where they presided over a brief meeting.
Reportedly, the motorcycle showdown was arranged to assert dominance amidst internal divisions within the party.
