A clash between Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP activists over the election of the president of a school managing committee in Mirpur, Kushtia, left at least 25 people injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 5pm at the grounds of Burapara Miton Secondary School in Amla Union.
Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mominul Islam confirmed the incident.
The injured individuals include Majnu, 55, son of Abdul Majid from Burapara village, Rezaul, 45, son of Julmat Mondol from Srirampur village, Ohidul, 40, son of Khoda Box from Burapara village, Jahangir Alam, 45, son of Abdul Aziz from Burapara village, Abul Hossain, 60, son of late Afsar Molla from Halsa village, Abul Kalam Azad, 55, son of late Sadeq Ali from Halsa village, Yunus Ali, 46, son of Akbar Ali from Mosharafpur village, Nasir, 56, son of Yusuf Mondol from Burapara village, and Yunus Molla, son of Waz Ali from Burapara village.
Some of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Kushtia General Hospital and Mirpur Upazila Health Complex.
According to eyewitnesses and OC Mominul Islam, the dispute was ongoing between Mokhlesur Rahman Mukul, the Amir of Jamaat in Amla Union, and local BNP leader Rashed Mahmud Nasir over the election of the president of the Burapara Miton Secondary School managing committee in Mirpur Upazila.
The feud escalated on Sunday, leading to a violent confrontation that injured 25 people. Of the injured, 12 were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital and six to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex.
The OC said: "Currently, the situation is under control. To prevent further clashes, additional police have been deployed in the area. Legal action will be taken against the culprits if a written complaint is filed and an investigation is conducted."
Jamaat leaders and activists claimed that Nasir was pressuring Mukul to withdraw from the election for the chairman of the Burapara Miton Secondary School management committee.
This led to a conflict, and on Saturday night, Nasir threatened Mukul. In protest, Jamaat leaders and activists organized a demonstration at the Burapara Secondary School field at 3pm on Sunday. During the protest, Nasir and his supporters attacked with sticks and local weapons.
When asked about the matter, several local Jamaat leaders were contacted by phone but did not respond.
Regarding the clash, Professor Suja Uddin Jowardar, Secretary of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Kushtia District unit, said: "An unexpected attack was carried out on Jamaat in connection with the school management committee election. Many of our leaders and activists were injured in this attack.”
He added: “The injured have been admitted to Mirpur and Kushtia hospitals, and several of them are in critical condition."
