Amena Begum could not attend the prayer gathering in Gopalganj for her sister-in-law’s husband. Tragically, she died in a road accident on the way. Along with her, two nieces and her young grandson Ayaz also lost their lives.
Ayaz’s parents, who are currently hospitalized, are still unaware of his death.
“We don’t know if we’ll ever overcome this sudden grief,” said Josna Begum, Amena Begum’s sister, tearfully.
She said: “This is not an accident but a premeditated murder.”
In an emotional statement, Josna Begum said: “My niece Anamika Akhter and her husband Sohan are critically injured and receiving treatment in the hospital. They don’t yet know that their beloved child is no longer alive. Ayaz has left this world forever. I can’t imagine their reaction when they hear this devastating news.”
She further said that Anamika’s condition is critical, with fractures in her hand and waist.
Her husband Sohan is in a similar condition.
Breaking into tears, Josna expressed her concern over how they would cope with the loss of their child.
On the other hand, Amena Begum’s husband, Iqbal Hossain, is in shock after losing his wife, two daughters, and grandson.
“On Friday at around 9:30am, my family was traveling to Gopalganj to attend a prayer gathering for my brother-in-law’s death. Around 12pm, I received the tragic news through a phone call from a member of the army,” he said.
“That night, my wife and two daughters were buried in the family graveyard at my in-laws’ house.”
The accident occurred around 11am on Friday near the Dhaleshwari toll plaza on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in South Keraniganj.
A reckless speeding bus hit multiple vehicles, killing six people, including four members of the same family.
Among the victims in the private car, three were buried in Nandankona village of Sirajdikhan, Munshiganj.
At 10pm on Friday night, Amena Begum and her two daughters, Israt Jahan Imu and Ria, were buried in the graveyard in Nagarkanda village.
Additionally, Amena’s grandson Ayaz was buried in his ancestral home in Noakhali, according to family sources.
Abdullah, 7, the son of Suman Mia from Hatirjheel, Dhaka, was also among the deceased. Reshma, mother of Abdullah passed away at 7:30pm on Friday while undergoing treatment in the emergency department.
Meanwhile, Anamika Akhter, Ayaz’s mother, his father Nur Alam Sohan, his aunt, and the driver of the car are all critically injured and undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Saiful Islam Mintu, Chairman of Kola Union in Sirajdikhan, expressed his grief, saying: “We cannot accept such a tragic death. It’s a deeply heartbreaking incident. Every driver should undergo a dope test.”
On Friday afternoon, Sohan Mia, along with his wife and child, was traveling from Jurain in Dhaka to their home in Gopalganj in a private car.
They were on the Mawa-bound lane when a reckless passenger bus hit their private car, microbus, and motorcycle from behind.
The collision killed Abdullah, 7, the son of motorbike rider Suman Mia, on the spot.
Local residents and army personnel rushed eight critically injured individuals to the hospital, but Ayaz Hossain, his grandmother Amena Begum, and his aunts Israt Jahan and Ria Moni died on the way.
Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of the Munshiganj Fire Station, said that the accident occurred when a high-speed bus from Bepari Paribahan hit a Mawa-bound private car from behind at high speed.
After the damaged vehicles were removed from the area in Keraniganj, normal traffic resumed.
