In the Harina ferry ghat area of Chandpur, seven out of the eight people on board the ship anchored in the Meghna River have now been confirmed dead.
Another severely injured individual is receiving treatment at the hospital.
Chandpur River Police Superintendent Syed Mushfiqur Rahman confirmed the discovery of the bodies at around 3:15pm on Monday.
The incident took place on the cargo ship MV Al-Bakhera, which was anchored at the time.
The details of the killings and the identities of the victims have yet to be confirmed, and investigations are ongoing by the police and law enforcement agencies.
Earlier in the afternoon, the river police recovered five bodies from the MV Al-Bakhera, which had been anchored in the Meghna River's Ishanbala area.
It is believed that the victims were killed on the night of Sunday, by assailants.
After recovering the bodies, three seriously injured individuals were taken to Chandpur General Hospital by 4pm.
Two of them were declared dead by the attending doctors.
The name of the third injured person, Jewel, 28, has not been disclosed.
Dr Anisul Islam, the attending physician at the hospital, said: "Three injured people were brought to the hospital. Two died while receiving treatment. They had injuries on various parts of their bodies."
Chandpur River Police Superintendent Syed Mushfiqur Rahman confirmed that five bodies were found in different rooms of the ship.
After three people were rescued and sent to the hospital, two more died there.
He also mentioned: "The victims aboard the cargo ship were killed with domestic weapons." The police suspect the killings may have been driven by enmity.
It is worth noting that the police were alerted by a call to the national emergency number 999 around 3pm. Upon reaching the scene, they found five bloodied bodies in different rooms of the ship, and three others severely injured.
Initially, it was confirmed that eight people were on board the ship.
The ship is owned by Brishty Enterprise, and it was traveling from Chittagong carrying fertilizer towards Sirajganj.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. This incident has caused a stir throughout the district.
