A massive whale was stranded in the shallow waters of the Meghna River in Hatia, Noakhali, struggling to free itself.
The whale was spotted by a fisherman, who immediately alerted local fishermen and together they managed to pull the animal back into the water.
The whale was discovered early on Thursday morning near the submerged island of Char Ataur in the Hatia region, located several kilometers away from the mainland of Hatia.
In the afternoon, a group of fishermen fishing in the area noticed something large stuck in the mud. They then attached ropes to the whale's tail and head, gradually pulling it back into the river.
Confirming the incident, Coast Guard Contingent Commander, Petty Officer Mohammad Khalisur Rahman, said that the whale likely weighs about around 2,000 kg. The whale might wander into the smaller river.
The whale is identified as a juvenile of the large blue whale species. These whales cannot survive in murky waters, as they require clean, deep waters for their habitat. He suggested that the animal should be taken to a rescue center immediately.
Fisheries Officer Fahad Hossain said that multiple species of whales are found in the region's waters and it is likely that this whale got stuck in the mud flats of Char Ataur, possibly after straying from deeper seas in search of food and being trapped by the rising tide, or got separated from its pod.
