Miscreants have shot and hacked to death a BNP leader in broad daylight in Bagerhat.
Sajeeb Tarafdar, 40, former joint convener of Dema Union Parishad unit BNP under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila, was on the way to Bagerhat city from his village home on Tuesday afternoon. He was riding a motorcycle with a pillion with him at the time of the attack.
Suddenly a group of masked men approached the vehicle and opened fire on them. They also hacked the duo indiscriminately, district Superintendent of Police Touhidul Arif told the media.
Shells of a shotgun were recovered from the spot, he added.
The pillion, Kamal Tarafder, has been admitted to Bagerhat 250-bed Hospital, the police official informed.
Local people suspect that the attack on Sajeeb, also a former Union Parishad member, took place due to his political identity.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
