The death toll from a massive fire at a CNG filling station in Mymensingh has risen to three, following the deaths of two more individuals who succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.
Dr Tariqul Islam, a resident doctor at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, confirmed the deaths on Tuesday morning.
The deceased include private car driver Himel Munsi, 27, of Kismat village, Sadar upazila, and Abdul Quddus, 29, and Tofazzal Mia, 45, both residents of Rahmatpur.
"Five individuals, including a woman, were admitted to our burn unit last night from Mymensingh with severe burns. One of them, Tofazzal Mia, passed away. Kamrul Hasan and Tofazzal Hossain remain in critical condition, while others, including Sumi Akhter and Abdul Malek, have been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to their serious condition," said Dr Tariqul.
Meanwhile, gas continues to leak from the vehicles at the filling station, and authorities estimate it may take another five to six hours to secure the leak.
The incident occurred around 2:45pm on Monday when a queue of vehicles had formed at Azad Filling Station in the city’s bypass area.
The explosion took place while refuelling an autorickshaw, quickly engulfing the station in flames.
Seven units of Mymensingh Fire Service responded to the scene, rescuing the injured and transporting them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
