Update : 01 Nov 2024, 07:19 PM

The history of the July-August uprising is set to be incorporated into the Bangladesh Studies course at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), for all departments.

This decision was unanimously made during the 49th Academic Council meeting held on Wednesday.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Shawkat Ali confirmed this on Friday, expressing hope that the matter will receive final approval in the upcoming syndicate meeting.

The vice-chancellor said: "By including the 'History of the July-August Revolution 2024' in the curriculum, students will become familiar with contemporary historical events. At the same time, they will understand the essence of national consciousness and struggle. This will foster moral values, respect for justice, and social responsibility among students."

Several members of the Academic Council proposed the inclusion of the "July-August Uprising 2024" in the Bangladesh Studies course for all departments.

After thorough discussion, the council reached a consensus to incorporate it into the curriculum starting from the next session.

Additionally, the university's student Adviser, Dr Mohammad Ileas Pramanik, noted that "the July-August Uprising 2024" is an ideal subject for fostering social responsibility and accountability among students.

He emphasized that this addition will make university students more responsible and aware, inspiring them in the spirit of national unity.

BRUR student Muntasir, along with others, welcomed the Academic Council's decision, saying: "We, the current generation, have witnessed the July-August uprising and participated in it. During the anti-discrimination movement, our university's English department student and one of the coordinators of the movement, Abu Sayed, was shot and killed by police on July 16. It makes us happy that this history will be known to future generations and will be remembered for a hundred years. We hope this will be implemented soon."
