Three people, including an army officer, were killed in separate road accidents in the Mohanpur upazila of Rajshahi.
The incidents occurred on Thursday at around 1pm and 9:30pm on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway.
Police have detained the drivers of a CNG-run autorickshaw and a goods-carrying engine-run three-wheeler, locally known as "bhotbhotii" in connection with the incidents.
The deceased have been identified as Mamatajul Islam Md Palash, 21, a soldier in the Bangladesh Army from Daspara, Manda upazila, Naogaon district; Tota Haji Abdul Quddus, 40, from Upper Talimpur village, Raninagar upazila, Naogaon district, who worked as an imam of a mosque; and Aminul Islam, 47, an easy-bike driver who died in the afternoon accident.
According to police, citing locals, at around 9pm on Thursday, a CNG was travelling from Rajshahi towards Keshorhat in Mohanpur.
As it reached in front of the Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex, it collided with a goods-carrying three-wheeler coming from the same direction.
The collision threw the passengers out, resulting in immediate fatalities. Five others were injured in the accident and were taken to the Mohanpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Earlier, at around 1pm on Thursday, Aminul Islam was killed in a head-on collision between a CNG and a motorcycle in the Keshorhat Bashhata area on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway.
Aminul, the son of Kasimuddin from Sakoa village, was a van driver by profession.
Witnesses reported that Aminul was heading to pick up passengers and had reached Keshorhat Bashhata when a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction hit him with significant force, causing severe injuries.
Fire service personnel rescued him and transported him in critical condition to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where he later succumbed to his injuries. The motorcycle driver, Mostahid, who was severely injured in the accident, is from Sabaihat area in Manda upazila, Naogaon district.
Speaking on the incident, Mohanpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Hannan said they have contacted the family of the army member, and they are on their way.
He added that the drivers of the CNG and goods-carrying three-wheeler have been detained, and both vehicles have been seized by the police.
A case will be filed in connection with the incident, and after the completion of legal procedures, the bodies will be handed over to the families.
