221 Awami League activists sued in Barisal over attack on BNP ‘victory procession’

'Legal action will be taken against those found to be involved'

A case was lodged in Betagi upazila, Barguna, on Friday, against 21 named and 200 unnamed activists of the Awami League.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Betagi police station Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter, stating that the case was filed for attacking a “victory procession” of the BNP following Sheikh Hasina's departure from the country on August 5.

"Legal action will be taken against those found to be involved in the incident after the investigation," the OC added.

Sujan Howladar, a resident of Betagi Sadar Union, filed the case.

Among the accused, the notable defendants are Fahria Sangram Aminul, former organizational secretary of Betagi Upazila Awami League; Babul Akhter, president of the Municipal Awami League; Rafiqul Islam, former general secretary of the Municipal Chhatra League; Abdul Mannan Howladar, general secretary of Upazila Sramik League; Masud Khan, former panel mayor of Betagi municipality and a member of the Upazila Awami League; Nasir Fakir, labour affairs secretary; Saiful Islam Sagar, treasurer of the Rickshaw Workers Union; and Rabbi Howladar, vice president of the Upazila Volunteer League.

According to police and case sources, on August 5, BNP leaders and activists organized a celebratory procession in Betagi town as Sheikh Hasina left for India.

The defendants, armed with various indigenous weapons, attacked the BNP leaders and activists who were participating in the procession, using explosives such as cocktails.
