A huge amount of local weapons has been recovered from the rooms of Chhatra League leaders in Shaheed Mukhtar Elahi Hall of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR).

The recovery took place during a raid led by the hall's provost on around 11pm on Sunday, targeting various rooms in the hall.

Professor Dr Mohammad Kamruzzaman, the provost of Shaheed Mukhtar Elahi Hall, confirmed the incident.

According to the hall administration and eyewitness students, rooms 305, 306, 503, and 511 in the hall had been locked since August 5.

Even after the university reopened on September 29, these rooms remained locked.

Late Sunday night, led by Provost Dr Kamruzzaman, the assistant provost and hall officials broke the locks and recovered various local weapons, including rods, machetes, knives, and axes.

These rooms were used by Chhatra League leaders, including President Pamel Barua, General Secretary Shamim, and Organizing Secretary Tagar.

Entry for general students into these rooms was strictly prohibited.

Reports indicate that during the anti-discrimination student movement, these weapons were used to attack protesters repeatedly.

Prior to the shooting death of university student Abu Sayed on July 16, Chhatra League members, with the help of outsiders, assaulted protesters multiple times, resulting in injuries to over a hundred individuals.

Names of several Chhatra League leaders, including President Pamel Barua and General Secretary Shamim, are mentioned in the case filed in connection with Abu Sayed murder.

In response, Provost Dr Kamruzzaman stated: “We had already issued notices for the removal of students residing illegally and for the allocation of rooms based on merit. After issuing the notices, we conducted a raid on Sunday night. During this operation, we recovered a large quantity of local weapons from several rooms. Necessary legal actions will be taken regarding this matter.”
