  • Hundreds of villages and 20,000 hectares of crops submerged
  • Water levels in some rivers have receded, but others remain above danger levels
Update : 08 Oct 2024, 12:22 PM

Netrakona experienced thunderstorms on Tuesday, raising concerns among locals that the district's flood situation may worsen if the rain, which began in the morning, continues.

Previously, with no rainfall over the last two days, the water levels of major rivers in the district had started to recede.

In the meantime, hundreds of villages in Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Purbadhala, Barhatta, and Netrakona Sadar upazilas have been submerged. Homes, roads, and various educational institutions have been flooded, and approximately 20,000 hectares of Aman paddy have been destroyed.

Additionally, over 200 fisheries and pond fish have been washed away, and 186 government primary schools in the flood-affected areas are closed.

Abdus Sattar, a farmer from Shukanakuri village in Kakairgara union of Durgapur upazila, expressed his concern, saying: "There was no rain, and the water was starting to recede. But now it has started again. If the rain does not stop, the flood situation will worsen, and our danger will increase."

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Water Development Board Executive Engineer Sarwar Jahan reported that as of 9am on Tuesday, water levels had decreased in some areas.

The Someswari River at the Vijaypur point was 469cm below the danger level, and at Durgapur point, it was 215cm below the danger level. The Kangsa River remained stable, flowing 37cm below the danger line. However, at Kalmakanda point, the Ubdhakhali River was still flowing 28cm above the danger level, while the Dhanu River’s water level was slightly rising but still 171cm below the danger line.
