Rainfall is expected to continue across Bangladesh for two more days before easing significantly from Tuesday, following several days of heavy downpours that triggered flooding and waterlogging in parts of the country, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said on Saturday.
The forecast cames after days of downpours inundated low-lying areas in at least seven districts, while intermittent showers continued in Dhaka on Saturday.
BMD Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Hoque said the heaviest rainfall over the past three to five days occurred in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, although the overall intensity has weakened over the last 24 hours.
He said Chuadanga recorded the country's highest rainfall during the period, with 147mm in the past 24 hours.
"There will be rain in different parts of the country on Sunday and Monday as well. However, rainfall may decrease significantly from Tuesday," Nazmul Hoque said.
He added that comparatively heavier rainfall is likely over the next 24 hours in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, although the overall intensity is expected to continue declining.
According to the meteorologist, the recent spell of heavy rain was caused by the combined effects of a low-pressure system over the sea, the active monsoon, and variations in atmospheric pressure.
The BMD has withdrawn Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 from all four seaports after strong winds over the sea subsided. The department has also lifted its landslide warning.
According to the BMD's 24-hour forecast, many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, and a few places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong divisions, may experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also possible in parts of Chittagong division.
Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) warned that the Teesta River's water level may rise over the next 48 hours due to rainfall in the Rangpur region and upstream areas.
Although rainfall has eased compared with the past few days, river levels across the country remain high. Heavy localized rain, particularly in the northern, northeastern, and hilly regions, could still raise water levels further and cause localized waterlogging.
If the forecast holds, weather conditions are expected to improve across most parts of the country from Tuesday as rainfall gradually subsides.
