A doctor tragically lost his life in Mymensign city after suffering severe burns as his mobile phone reportedly exploded while charging beside his bed.
The victim, Dr Tariqul Alam, 42, was an assistant professor in the Orthopedics Department of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. He was the son of the late Taher Uddin, a resident of the Garib Jamir Munshi area in the city.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday.
He was declared dead at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital taken shortly after being found in critical condition.
According to family members, Dr Tariqul returned home from duty around 1am and went to sleep alone in a separate room.
He plugged his mobile phone into a multi-plug to charge it beside his bed before falling asleep.
Around 4am, his phone reportedly exploded, causing severe burns to his hands, chest, and face. The family rushed him to the hospital after hearing the explosion and noticing the smell of smoke, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Following the incident, Tariqul’s brother, Tasrikul Alam, requested to take the body without an autopsy, applying to the Additional District Magistrate and local police.
No one from the family has agreed to speak about the incident.
Kotwali model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shafiqul Islam Khan confirmed the details, saying that the doctor had returned from a late-night surgery and gone to sleep without disturbing his family.
The police suspect the phone exploded while charging, which caused the fatal burns.
The brand of the phone is yet to be identified, and the body has been handed over to the family as no complaints were filed, he added.
