A trader has been stabbed to death while his wife sustained injuries in an attack at Joypurpara area in Bogra Sadar upazila early Wednesday.

The deceased, Rana Mia, 45, was a local resident and an iron trader by profession.

His wife, Rozy Begum, 38, has been admitted to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra.

Inspector Redwanur Rahim, in-charge of the Fulbari police outpost, on Wednesday morning said that the body had been sent to the morgue.

He said that it is primarily believed that the miscreants stabbed the couple for not receiving extortion money.

According to police, locals and family sources, Rana was returning home with his wife after a visit to his sister’s home. Along the way, they were stopped by a group of people who attempted to extort them. When they refused, they attacked the couple with a sharp weapon and fled.

The victims were rescued and rushed to the hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Rana dead.

Those involved in the killing have been identified and attempts are being made to arrest them, the police officer said.
