The Department of Environment (DoE) has suspended the environmental clearance for SN Corporation (Unit-2) and the MT Swarajya scrap ship following an accident that resulted in casualties.
A show-cause notice has been issued, requiring both parties to explain within three working days why their operations should not be permanently halted, according to a press release from the Ministry of Environment on Sunday.
Until further notice, all ship-breaking activities involving the Swarajya scrap ship have been suspended.
On September 7, an explosion occurred while cutting the MT Swarajya scrap ship at the SN Corporation (Unit-2) shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda, Chittagong, leaving one person dead and 11 others injured.
Initial investigations have revealed multiple violations of the environmental clearance conditions at the shipbreaking yard. Additionally, it is believed that the conditions for the scrap ship's clearance were also breached, stated the DoE.
