Update : 21 Aug 2024, 06:25 PM

Low-lying areas of Chittagong's Fatikchhari upazila have been inundated by heavy rains and hill streams. The Halda and Feni rivers in the upazila and the Dhurung, Lelang, and Sarta canals are flowing above the danger level.

Vehicular traffic has been stopped on the main roads in some areas, and there is a fear of severe flooding.

Since Tuesday night, the administration has begun mitigating erosion in affected areas and alleviating the hardships of those trapped by the floods.

Dantmara, Narayanhata, Bhujpur, Paindong, Harualchari, Suabil, Lelang, Sundarpur, Fotikchhari Municipality, Nazirhat Municipality, Rosangiri, and Samitirhat union are submerged.

In Narayanhat, the main roads are impassable due to waterlogging, and the upazila administration has opened emergency service centres for the safety of people in risky areas. Hundreds of acres of newly planted Aman rice, nurseries, and monsoon vegetable fields have been submerged.

Furthermore, about 20-30 fishwater bodies and several ponds have been reported submerged. The flood has also heavily damaged poultry and cattle farms.

Rosangiri Union Parishad (UP) Chairman SM Shoaib Al Salehin said: “Several villages in the union are inundated. Water has entered homes and various educational institutions.”

He warned that the situation could worsen if the water continues to rise. Both personal initiatives and upazila administration efforts are underway to distribute dry food among the victims.

Raozan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said: “The hill torrents and heavy rains have increased the people's suffering. The district administration has been informed of the damages, and necessary measures will be taken after inspecting the affected areas.”
