Coming to file vandalism case, upazila chairman lands in jail in counter-case

Afsar Ali, chairman of Bochaganj Upazila Parishad of Dinajpur, has been arrested and sent to jail in a case filed by students when he came to the police station to file a case over vandalizing and torching his house.

Afsar went to the Bochaganj police station to file a complaint that his houses were vandalized and set on fire.

At the same time, a delegation of anti-discrimination students was present at the police station.

At one stage, the upazila chairman threatened the students. Then hundreds of students gathered and surrounded the chairman.

He verbally announced his resignation from the post of chairman in the face of their protest, reports Prothom Alo. 

Later, Afsar Ali was shown arrested in the case filed by the students.

The incident took place at Bochaganj police station in Dinajpur on Friday night.

Upazila Chairman Afsar Ali also holds the post of General Secretary of the same Upazila Awami League.

This was the first time he was elected as the chairman. He was in hiding since the fall of the government on August 5.

Faisal Mostak, a student of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, has become the plaintiff in the case filed on behalf of the students of anti-discrimination student movement.

According to the statement of the case, the students took out a peaceful procession from Setabganj Government College during the student movement on July 18. Following an order of the upazila chairman, Afsar Ali, some leaders and activists of the Chhatra League ambushed the procession with local weapons. They also threatened the protesting students and molested the girls.

Due to their threats, the students could not even go to any medical centre in the area to receive treatment.

The names of 24 people including former state minister for shipping and former parliament member of Dinajpur-1 constituency Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, and his secretary Abdul Bashar have been named as defendants in the case.

Apart from this, 70 to 75 unidentified persons have been charged.

The police sent him to jail through the court on Friday night.

Bochaganj police station officer-in-charge Abu Bakkar Siddique Mohammad Russell said that the upazila chairman came to the police station.

 At that time, the chairman had a discussion with the students at the police station.

Later, he verbally resigned in the face of the student’s protest. In the case filed by the students, the chairman was arrested and sent to jail by the court at 11:30pm on Friday, said the OC.
