The Gopalganj district Awami League and allied organizations have vowed to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh.
Leaders and activists took an oath after paying respects at the tomb of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara at 12pm on Wednesday.
The oath was led by district Awami League President Mahbub Ali Khan.
The leaders declared in unison: "We swear that we will not return home until Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina is brought back to the soil of Bangladesh."
District Awami League General Secretary GM Sahabuddin Azam, Tungipara Municipal Awami League President Sheikh Saiful Islam, among others, spoke at the event.
Earlier, leaders and activists of the district Awami League and allied organizations arrived in Tungipara from Gopalganj with a procession. They paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's mausoleum with flowers and stood in silence by the altar. After recitation from the Quran, they participated in a special prayer for the souls of Bangabandhu and those martyred on August 15, 1975.
GM Sahabuddin Azam emphasized the need for political action, adding: "We must continue to resist and protest until Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana are brought back to the country. Even if someone is arrested, including myself, do not sit still. With the energy you are demonstrating now, take to the streets with twice the fervor. The people of Gopalganj are devoted to Mujib and are passionate. Victory is certain for us."
District Awami League Office Secretary Ilyas Haque noted: "Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of prime minister on Monday. Since then, we have been active, giving courage to the people of Gopalganj. So far, there is no pressure from higher authorities to stay off the streets."
