Nationwide unrest: Over 700 arrested in Chittagong in eight days

Most of those arrested are BNP-Jamaat activists

At least 27 cases have been filed across the Chittagong district in the past week over the recent nationwide unrest.

The latest case was filed at the Chandgaon police station on Wednesday in connection with the vandalism, attempted murder, and arson at the Chittagong Water Development Board office. 

Between 500 and 700 individuals have been accused in this case.

Police said so far a total of 703 people have been arrested in connection with the murder, riots, criminal activities, and sabotage related to the movement from the night of July 16 to the morning of Wednesday. Most of those arrested are BNP-Jamaat activists.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Media and Public Relations Department Kazi Md Tarek Aziz, said a total of 373 arrests were made, including 46 in the last 24 hours, in 16 cases in the metropolitan area. 

Chittagong District Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Abu Tayeb Md Arif Hossain, said 11 cases have been registered related to the attacks and vandalism connected to the quota movement in the district. 

At least 330 people, including 57 individuals in the last 24 hours, have been arrested.

Injured receiving treatment at CMCH

At least 16 individuals injured in the clashes during the anti-quota movement are currently receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). 

Brigadier General Taslim Uddin, the hospital director, confirmed on Wednesday that one of the 16 injured is being treated in the ICU and is in a critical condition.

He added that a total of 208 people injured in recent clashes have been treated at the hospital so far.
