At least two students were injured during a protest demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs after an attack allegedly carried out by local Chhatra League members in Faridpur.
The incident took place in front of Faridpur Govt Girls High School around 11am on Tuesday.
The two injured are - Kazi Nishat, a student of Gopalganj Science and Technology University and Abrar Nadim Itu, a student of Faridpur Rajendra College.
They are currently being treated at the Faridpur sadar hospital.
According to protesters and witnesses, the group started gathering on the road around 11am on Tuesday. During the movement, Chhatra League activists attacked them with locally-made weapons.
Although the protesters initially dispersed, they regrouped at 11:30am. The demonstrators then staged a protest on the city's main Mujib Road for an hour.
They strongly condemned the attack by Chhatra League activists and demanded punishment for those responsible for the assault on the peaceful rally.
At the same time, injured student leader Abrar Nadim Itu announced that the movement would continue.
Hasanuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, said tension broke out between the agitating students and another group. “But we took control of the situation quickly.”
