Update : 16 Jul 2024, 01:40 PM

Students from various educational institutions in Barisal have taken to the streets in protest against attacks on those demanding quota system reform. They have blocked different points of the Dhaka-Barisal highway, effectively bringing the city to a standstill.

Students from Govt Brojomohun College, Barisal Polytechnic Institute and Infra Polytechnic Institute blocked the Dhaka-Barisal highway near the Nathullabad bus terminal, around 11:30am, halting all types of vehicular movement.

The students chanted slogans for quota reforms.

Students from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College blocked the Barisal-Kuakata highway at Amtala More, demanding justice for the attacks on students nationwide and calling for quota system reforms.

Despite a heavy police presence at each blockade point, no attempts have been made to hinder the protestors. In the morning, some Chhatra League activists attempted to disrupt the protest at Govt Brojomohun College, but the police intervened and removed them. The blockade continued at all points at 12:15pm.

Barisal Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazlur Rahman said that no major untoward incidents have occurred and that they are monitoring the situation peacefully.
