Tornado ravishes Mongla, causes 5.5hrs of power outage

Fallen poles, broken wires caused power outage

Update : 19 Jun 2024, 10:04 PM

An unexpected tornado struck Mongla in Bagerhat, causing extensive damage to homes and uprooting electrical poles. Following the tornado, Mongla experienced a power outage for approximately five and a half hours.

On Wednesday, the sudden tornado hit Hajipara, a suburban area of the municipal town.

The house of Razzak Khan was destroyed by the tornado. All belongings were scattered and soaked in rain, leaving the family exposed to the elements. Fortunately, there were no injuries as the house was unoccupied during the tornado.

Furthermore, reports indicate that various homes, trees, and electric poles were damaged across different areas of the upazila.

The fallen poles and broken wires caused a power outage from noon until around 5pm. Power was gradually restored in some areas later in the evening.

Despite the storm subsiding, heavy rain continued until around 6:30pm, creating a disaster-like atmosphere in the coastal areas of the sea and Sundarbans in Mongla.

Attempts to contact Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nishat Tamanna and Upazila Project Implementation Officer (UPIO) Jafar Rana for comments on the damage and assistance to the affected were unsuccessful as their phones went unanswered.
